By Dr Kofi AMPONSAH-BEDIAKO
IN view of current developments to get a candidate capable of appealing to all Ghanaians in all parts of the country to enable the New Patriotic Party to break the cycle of 8 years experienced up to this time between the NPP and the NDC, strenuous efforts are being made by the NPP to ensure that its flagbearer is carefully selected to win the 2024 elections not only for the NPP but for the entire country including the NDC.
Initially, each of the candidates who expressed interest to become flag bearer of the NPP was found to be quite good for the job. However, as has been emphasised over and over, only one of them can lead the country as a flag bearer.
A football team may be made up of dazzling stars but it is not all the players who may necessarily have to lead that team. Normally, it is only one of such players, the most suitable, who is selected to occupy the position of captainship.
Any candidate who wants to become a flagbearer must exhibit his or her suitability in terms of honesty, decent behaviour, integrity and also one who stands tall among others when it comes to relationship with others in society. Such a person is also expected to be respectable and respectful in society.
A friend of mine expresses concern over people who expect to be addressed or regarded as honourable but whose behaviour does not merit the title of being honourable. Some of these people joined the NPP race to become flagbearers initially but have dropped off along the line while one or two others are still in the race.
Some of those who are still in the race are making detestable pronouncements that are meant to destroy the integrity of their own party even though such pronouncements are not only shameful but senseless and has no merit. This attitude must cease immediately without delay.
The decent candidates among them have been recognised all over the country and at the right time will be rewarded with votes on November 4. On that day, people will be made to know what many Ghanaians refer to as, “Your smoothness level”. This means that they will be appropriately placed in their disrespectful positions.
It has become clear that one of the candidates stands for humility, respect, hardwork, vision and ability to meet challenging situations. The person who undoubtedly will be selected by the NPP delegates is Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia who has shown himself to be committed to the ideals of the party.
It is also important to put away the issue of tribalism and ethnicity behind us and rather push forward the agenda of development meant to benefit all Ghanaians. In the same way, the issue of religion must also be pushed to the background because they will not help this country to develop in any way.
Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia is known to be a Moslem but his love and relationship with Christian groups in the country has proved to be appealingly fantastic. The issue of where a person comes from in the country should also not be part of the political equation. We should be interested in a person who is loyal and committed to the national developmental agenda and we know that Dr. Bawumia stands for these positive traits.
During the Super Delegates Conference held on August 26, Dr. Bawumia won in all the 16 regions. He also won at the national headquarters of the NPP. In fact, he won over 68% of the total valid votes cast. Undoubtedly, Dr. Bawumia is what the people want but this will have to be confirmed on November 4 when the larger number of delegates decide on that issue through voting.
Investigations conducted in each of the 16 regions in the country clearly shows that the candidate who is on the lips of every delegate is Dr. Bawumia. He’s someone who stands for the truth, the whole truth, nothing but the truth. On November 4, Dr. Bawumia will be glorified by the delegates whose pattern of voting will show that some of the senseless candidates will not even go beyond 15% of the votes cast.
What some of us like about this admirable candidate, that is the Vice President, is that he acknowledges that his victory belongs to the NPP but not to himself.
The kingdom of heaven has spoken and chosen Dr. Bawumia as the flagbearer of the NPP who will be expected to go into the 2024 elections and come out with great victory. For this reason, no one should be jealous of him but rather pray for him to lead the country into a higher pedestal of development.
What is good and remarkable about Dr. Bawumia is that he’s working hard by way of campaigning in all parts of the country. This together with his commitment to the progress of the country, backed by the blessings of God is what will elevate him above other candidates and place him as President of Ghana on 7th January 2025 after the current wonderful President, His Excellency Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo.
May the almighty God continue to protect Dr. Bawumia against all negative forces and make him a champion of champions irrespective of all the obstacles being placed in his way by his detractors. Amen.
